Infrared Sauna at AION in Limassol, Cyprus

Infrared sauna: the hour your week actually unclenches

You carry stress in your body, sleep worse than you admit, and the one place you reliably let go is heat. That is real physiology, with some of the most interesting long-term data in recovery medicine behind it. At AION the infrared cabin is private, hemlock-built with red light heating, and scheduled as a working part of your plan rather than a spa extra.

What heat research actually shows

Sauna has some of the most interesting long-term data of anything in recovery medicine, and it deserves honest framing:

  • In a 20-year study of 2,315 Finnish men, frequent sauna use was associated with roughly 60% lower risk of sudden cardiac death and markedly lower dementia risk. An association in traditional sauna users, not proof that sessions cause the benefit (Laukkanen 2015, 2017)
  • In heart failure, supervised far-infrared heat programs improved symptoms and walking distance in a 149-patient randomized trial, delivered as a medical protocol rather than a spa visit (Tei 2016)
  • A single sham-controlled trial found one whole-body infrared session reduced depression scores for up to six weeks (Janssen 2016). Small, but rigorously designed
  • Claims about detox through sweat and anti-aging have no trial support, and AION does not make them

Who may be suitable

Heat is one of the oldest recovery tools there is, but it is still a cardiovascular load, so a short screening comes first.

It fits well when

  • Recovery and sleep quality are part of your plan
  • You tolerate heat comfortably
  • You want a quiet, private session rather than a shared spa

Screening looks closely at

  • Heart conditions and blood pressure
  • Pregnancy
  • Medication that affects heat tolerance

What a session involves

Sessions are simple by design. The discipline is in the scheduling and screening, not the ritual.

1

Before

A short screening review and a reminder to hydrate. Towels and everything else are provided.

2

During

You sit or recline in the private cabin while the infrared panels warm you directly. You control the session and can step out at any time.

3

After

Rehydrate, cool down at your own pace, and carry on with your day.

Risks and limitations

The sauna is the least clinical room at AION and is treated honestly as such: no treatment claims, screening for heat contraindications, hydration guidance. Sessions are gentle for most people. Worth knowing:

  • Dehydration if you skip fluids, which is the most common issue
  • Lightheadedness when standing up too quickly after heat
  • Heat is screened for heart conditions and pregnancy before your first session

Questions about Infrared Sauna

A traditional sauna heats the air to a high temperature. Infrared panels warm your body directly at a lower air temperature, which most people find easier to tolerate for longer sessions.

People with certain heart conditions, unstable blood pressure, or during pregnancy. The screening before your first session covers this.

Yes. It is a private two-person cabin, booked for you alone or with a partner, not a shared facility.

Both. Long-term Finnish studies link frequent sauna use with lower cardiovascular and dementia risk, though as an association rather than proof. What is certain is the physiology: heat is a genuine cardiovascular stimulus, and most people sleep and unwind better with it in their week. AION frames it exactly that way: supportive, with interesting data, not a treatment.

There is no established evidence that infrared sauna treats Hashimoto's or any thyroid condition, and AION does not claim it does. If heat and recovery are part of your plan for other reasons, your physician will tell you plainly if a thyroid or autoimmune condition means you should be screened more carefully first.
