Whole Body Cryotherapy for Weight Loss, Fat Reduction, and Metabolic Markers
The best controlled trial available found that whole body cryotherapy did not beat standard obesity management alone, and did not activate brown fat.

In short
The strongest controlled trial to date found that adding 28 whole body cryotherapy sessions to a standard lifestyle program did not improve weight loss at 5 or 12 months, and did not activate brown adipose tissue, compared with the lifestyle program alone. A smaller, uncontrolled study reported waist circumference reductions, but its design cannot show that cryotherapy caused the effect. At this point, cryotherapy should not be presented as a weight-loss or fat-reduction treatment. It may still have a role as an adjunct for recovery or comfort during a physician-led metabolic program, but that is a different claim from evidence of fat loss.
The clinical question
Does whole body cryotherapy enhance weight loss, brown adipose tissue activation, or metabolic parameters beyond standard obesity management alone?
What is established
Whole body cryotherapy exposes a person to very cold air, typically for two to four minutes, in a specialized chamber or cabin. As a wellness and recovery procedure it has a long track record in sports medicine and post-exercise recovery settings, and its short-term physiological effects, including skin cooling, vasoconstriction and a transient stress-hormone response, are well described.
What is not established is a separate claim: that this cold exposure meaningfully changes body weight, fat mass, or brown adipose tissue activity beyond what a person achieves through diet and exercise alone. That is the specific question this review addresses, and it is a narrower question than whether cryotherapy is safe or pleasant to use.
What the controlled trial evidence actually shows
The most rigorous evidence available is a randomized controlled trial of 19 participants who received 28 whole body cryotherapy sessions combined with a conventional obesity management program, compared against the same program alone. At both 5 months and 12 months, the cryotherapy group did not lose more weight than the lifestyle-only group. Imaging also found no evidence that the added cold sessions activated brown adipose tissue, which is the tissue type most often invoked as the biological mechanism behind cold-induced fat burning.[1]
The same trial did find some short-term differences in fasting glucose and LDL cholesterol favoring the cryotherapy group, but these were isolated marker changes, not changes in weight, fat mass, or any longer-term outcome, and the sample size of 19 people is too small to draw firm conclusions even about those markers.[1]
A separate, smaller study of 37 menopausal women with metabolic syndrome reported reductions in waist circumference and android fat percentage after 20 cryotherapy sessions, along with a rise in irisin and IL-6 and no change in CRP. On its own this looks like supporting evidence, but the study was not randomized, had no sham or placebo comparison, and did not control diet or exercise during the study period. A reduction that shows up without a control arm cannot be attributed to the cold exposure itself.[2]
The trap: a marker change is not a weight-loss outcome
Both available studies illustrate the same pattern seen across many wellness interventions. A study reports that some blood marker or body measurement moved in a favorable direction, and that finding gets marketed as evidence the treatment works. But fasting glucose, LDL, irisin, IL-6, and even waist circumference are not the same thing as durable weight loss or improved long-term metabolic health, and a marker moving in an uncontrolled study can reflect diet changes, seasonal variation, measurement noise, or regression to the mean rather than the treatment being tested.[1][2]
The distinction that matters
A short-term change in one blood marker is not the same claim as weight loss, fat reduction, or improved metabolic health, and the one randomized trial available found no benefit on the outcomes that matter most: weight and brown fat activation.
What remains uncertain, and the negative finding this review will not omit
The central negative finding here is direct and should not be softened: in the only randomized, controlled trial testing this question, 28 sessions of whole body cryotherapy added to a standard obesity management program produced no additional weight loss at 5 or 12 months, and no detectable activation of brown adipose tissue, compared with the standard program alone.[1]
The trial base is also very small, 19 participants in the controlled study and 37 in the uncontrolled comparative study, so the evidence base as a whole is thin in both directions. It is not large enough to rule out a small benefit in some subgroup, but it is also not large enough to support a general claim that cryotherapy helps with weight loss, and the best-designed study found no effect at all.[1][2]
What this means for you
AION does not offer whole body cryotherapy as a weight-loss or fat-reduction treatment, and this review is a reason to be explicit about that rather than to imply otherwise. Where cryotherapy is used, it sits alongside diagnostics and a physician-led metabolic assessment, not in place of one, and if you are expecting weight change from it, that expectation gets checked against this evidence before a session is booked.
If you are pursuing weight loss or metabolic improvement, the evidence points toward standard, well-studied approaches, nutrition, physical activity, and where appropriate medical management, as the basis of the program. Cryotherapy may still have a place for recovery, comfort, or as a component a physician chooses to include for other reasons, but that decision is made individually and never presented as a fixed protocol or a substitute for established obesity care.[1]
